What Are You Waiting For?
Read Psalm 31:24
Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD!
What does it mean to wait for the LORD?
Waiting is not easy, even for really simple things like standing in line. Our time is precious, and we have long lists of to-dos and deadlines. That kind of waiting can be frustrating. But waiting is even more difficult in other circumstances like waiting to see if medical treatment is successful or waiting for the blessing of a child. Waiting in situations like that can be discouraging. It's easy to lose hope of trying to protect your heart.
And yet David says, "Be strong and let your heart take courage!". Take heart. But how can you be strong when you feel so weak? How can you be encouraged when you feel so defeated? My advice is to remember who and what you are waiting for. You are waiting for the LORD!
In Psalm 31, David reminds us who we are waiting on and what we are waiting for. He reminds us that God is righteous. David calls God his rock, his fortress, and his refuge. All safe places that speak to God's strength to save and protect. He reminds us that idols are worthless, but God can be trusted. He spoke of God's love and expressed that he knows God sees his pain.
He knew that God was merciful. He was honest with God about his suffering and anguish, but he reaffirmed his trust in God. He knew who he was waiting for--a faithful God.
In Psalm 31:19, he begins answering the question of what we are waiting for. He reminds us that God has good things stored up for those of us that trust Him. He will protect us, shelter us, give us strength, and rescue us. He will preserve us, and He will keep us. We can depend on it.
Friends, we can have the courage and be strong even when life is hard because we are waiting on the promises of a faithful God. It will be in God's perfect timing, and it will be in this life or the next. But because we believe, we can move from despair to "waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ" (Titus 2:13).
We know that God is faithful. We know that He is going to show up. We know that ultimately, God is going to rescue us for good. Today, let God's promises give you strength and courage as you wait on the LORD.
God, sometimes it's easy to get discouraged and lose heart. Remind me who You are and what I am waiting for. Help me to look forward to and wait expectantly for the full realization of Your promises-Your kingdom come. Amen.
