A HOUSE DIVIDED
"First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet
life in all godliness and dignity."
1 Timothy 2:1-2
America is in trouble, serious trouble. It seems as if the vast majority of our politicians consider lying to be part of the job. Who can we trust to tell us the honest-to-God truth? The Democrats? The Republicans? The Mainstream Media? All of these entities have an agenda … an agenda that appears to be trumping (no pun intended) truth and decency.
Since all three of these key players appear to believe the end justifies the means, “we the people” are subjected to blatant lies, half-truths, vitriolic innuendos, and unprecedented in-fighting. All these evils do nothing but weaken the country and stir the pot of growing discord.
Jesus said, “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself shall not stand” (Matthew 12:25). How will our “united states” continue to stand when we throw truth, decency, civility, and respect out the window in order to beat the opposition at any cost? From my perspective, it appears that many in the media are so fueled by hatred that they are content to sink the ship just to get at the captain. Newsflash! If the ship goes down, liberals and conservatives alike suffer the same consequences. I think we would all agree it is highly foolish to burn down your house in order to kill a rat.
WHAT TO DO?
In the midst of political turmoil, financial uncertainty, and the threat of war, Christians can make the difference.
1. We can pray for our country and our leaders. God commands us to pray for our leaders, whether we agree with them or not. Leaders are human beings with feelings and families. Constant, vicious mockery and personal attacks are extremely hard for anyone to withstand. Proverbs 11:11 is surely apropos, "By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down." Wicked (immoral, ungodly) people can tear down a church, a city, and a country by the power of caustic and contemptible communication.
2. We can shine for Christ and share His story. The answers to America’s problems are not found in any politician or political party. They are only found in the Lord Jesus Christ. We are in the shape we are in as a nation because we have abandoned our heritage. We no longer want to honor God or follow His ways. As a result, we have ushered in a new morality where everything and anything goes. It is akin to opening Pandora's box. To quote Dr. Phil, “Hey America, how’s that working for ya?”
Nevertheless, Christians hold the key to revival. As we get right with God and walk in the light with God, men will notice a difference (see Matthew 5:16). They may hate us for our stand, but they will respect us for our commitment. God will use our uncompromising witness to speak to hearts and point the way to Jesus.
The time is now for Christians to put on the full armor and engage the enemy. The devil is having a field day in America right now. Let’s stand firm against him, calling on the name of the Lord as we lift high the cross and the empty tomb. While we may live in America, our true citizenship as believers in Jesus is in heaven. Regardless of what happens to our country, we are safe and secure in the Lord.
