Who Is Jesus?

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

—Colossians 1:15

I heard the story of a little boy awakened by thunder and lightening.  He called out to his father, “Daddy, come quickly!  I’m scared.”

The father said, “God loves you and He will take care of you.”

“I know God loves me,” said the little boy, “but right now I want somebody who has skin on.”

For all practical purposes Jesus Christ was God with skin on, God as man walking among us.  The Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Colossae,

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.  All things were created through Him and for Him.  And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.  And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. (Colossians 1:15–18)

There is no question about what Paul meant.  Jesus is God, manifested as a man.  But there are many today who want to say, “That Jesus—He was a wonderful prophet.  He was a great, godly man, a great human teacher.”  No.  Jesus is God in human form, the second member of the Trinity, the incarnate deity.
