What Are You Doing with Your Life?

This devotional was written by Dan Johnson

A time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. —John 4:23-24

My daughter begged us for five years to get a dog. Finally, out of the deep generosity of our heart (also known as sheer exhaustion), we relented and bought a little poodle mix from the Humane Society. We love (like) this little white dog. The great thing about Teddy is that he is completely predictable.

One of the things he does when he has free reign of the house is to find the nearest bedroom or bathroom, sneak in and eat tissue from the garbage can. This can’t be good for him and when the dog is loose and quiet we are constantly asking, “Where’s Teddy?” Not unlike the little dog, human beings are predictable.

And not unlike the little dog, human beings sometimes do things they are not supposed to do. Interestingly, the first question God asked mankind after his/her sin was: “Where are you?”

There’s a famous story in the Bible about Peter, the disciple of Jesus and how he was asked to step out of a boat into the ocean by Jesus Christ. When I hear people teach about that, they usually talk about the fear of stepping out of the boat. But there are a great many actions I haven’t taken, when I knew that action would benefit me and fear was not the reason. Comfort is my curse. I fear that comfort keeps many of us from realizing the urgency of the moment and taking simple daily actions to change our lives. A change of our daily routine, doing little things differently, doing more and talking less can have huge impact in our lives.

Go ahead and take a moment to see what particular procrastination dogs you. And do something, anything to get back in step with God who is all about movement, growth, and change.

1. What three areas of your life do you put off?

2. Why is this and what changes can you make today?

John 4:35,36; 1 Corinthians 6:2
