Meekness Isn’t Weakness - One Year Devotions for Women

Now Moses was more humble than any other person on earth. - Numbers 12:3

Moses’ humility amazes me. He seems to have been a “gentle giant.” Here was a man who had sat and talked with God—literally! God had spoken to him in a burning bush (Exodus 3:2, 6), used him in bringing plagues upon Egypt (Exodus 5–12), and even asked him to climb a mountain “to appear before God” (Exodus 19:3). Moses received the Ten Commandments directly from God. Here in Numbers 12, however, Moses’ own brother and sister criticized him. Yet when God placed judgment on Miriam, Moses interceded and begged for God to heal her.

Moses remained close to God, while the people in his charge constantly rebelled. But Moses was never above interceding for them with God. His personal greatness and strength were controlled by God, and the prevailing attitude of his life was humility.

Jesus Christ was a superb model of humility. It took great power to exercise humility in redeeming sinful, uncaring, disobedient people. Yet when we study Jesus, we see a man moving among people in eternal strength, wrapped in earthly humility.

Jesus provides the perfect example, for he never failed to be humble. Moses provides an earthly reminder that humility can be found in people who have great ability and great responsibility. Yet those human beings will sometimes fail too. We must always look to the One who showed us how to live in humility as children of the King. Let us follow in his steps.
