Light in the Darkness

By Karen Whiting

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.’” Matthew 2:1-2

In a moonless night I see the stars. The sun’s rays that overwhelm them during day sets, and the first twinkle shines above me. This light doesn’t flood or warm me like the sun, but it sparkles. It doesn’t shower brightness around me. I must look up to see the glimmer.

Yet the constellations guide me, helping me find my direction, as I find the North Star.

So, too, in the dark night of my soul, God’s light shines, but I must open my spiritual eyes to see it. It’s not the bright joyful spark of when I first met Christ. I feel alone, unable to see anyone around me. When despair and loneliness hit, I must look to God and find the twinkling of hope.

The wise men who followed a heavenly star so long ago seemed to reach a point when they no longer saw it. Then they listened to words of prophecy, telling the location of the newborn King. These travelers followed the words and their hearts and proceeded to the King.

When I cannot see any light, I trust and follow God’s words preserved in Scripture. This brings hope to my heart. This Christmas, I encourage you to do the same. When circumstances feel hard, know this: God is always near.
