The Best Giveaway Win

By Kristen Terrette

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” Psalm 51:12

I’m a sucker for giveaways. I’ve probably entered a thousand in my lifetime, everything from HGTV’s dream home contest to the “drop a business card” in a smoothie’s store fishbowl for a chance to win a coupon. But I never seem to win any, so when I won a fairly big (in my eyes) free prize, I was ecstatic.

My loot consisted of a free Kindle Fire, gift cards for a fancy pajamas store and Amazon, as well as books—quite a few of them, including a couple from my favorite authors.

As an avid reader, this was a big haul on a chance win. Every time I’d get one of the items in the mail, no matter how dreary or stressful my day had been up until then, I couldn’t hold back a smile.

But today’s verse reminds me that giveaway win actually wasn’t my biggest. You see, my salvation from the Lord is incomparably my largest, and completely unrestricted and special prize. It was free to enter, free to win, and brought me pure joy for eternity that springs from the very depths of my soul.

But sometimes during life’s trials, I’ve placed weights of sadness, pain and disasters on top of this eternal joy-spring, forgetting its power and dulling its effects.  Yet today’s Psalm reminds me I can ask God to restore the joy He gave at my salvation, where I realized He’d forgiven all of my wrongdoing, and secured my eternity with Him.

Joy because Jesus saved me is way better than any giveaway achievement I could receive on earth. And as we have a willing spirit to learn and grow, this joy can get us through anything. Thank You, God, for giving us the very best giveaway win ever.
