Letting God be Our Shepherd
By Andrea Chatelain

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.” Psalm 23:1

I suffer from a case of the “betters.” I want to be a better mom, for my kids to behave better, my writing career to do better, and my relationships to be better. Even though I don’t consider myself a materialistic person, I often struggle with contentment. My thoughts tend to lead me towards restlessness or a flat out bad attitude.

What if I stopped leading myself? Instead of setting expectations for people and situations, what would happen if I focused on the Lord as my shepherd?

Everything would truly be better.

On days I trust Jesus to be my everything, He reminds me I am loved by the Father completely. There’s no need to prove myself, and there’s nothing more to desire. My identity and needs are met in Christ, not in efforts to grasp at more.

You and I have Jesus. He has more love, forgiveness, and purpose for His people than we can possibly fathom. If we have Jesus, and we diligently seek His will, we’ll not live in want. We’ll live filled with gratitude for His companionship in hard times, joy in His presence in the good, and wonder at the opportunities only His hand can orchestrate.

I’m done thinking I know what’s better. I want what Jesus, my shepherd, decides is best.
