A Prayer for Peace When the World Feels Chaotic

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” - Philippians 4:8-9

Lately, it’s as sudden as one step outside my bedroom door, a few seconds scroll through social media, or the flip of a TV channel, and I’m smacked in the face with the reality of chaos in my world—or the world. At times, I want to take a 180 turn, close my door, power off my phone, and hide the remote to every television in the house. And at other times, I’m tempted to step right into the chaos that then opens the door to the consumption of my mind, body, and soul. But honestly, I don’t think either option is always practical or ideal. I can’t hide forever, nor is it healthy to completely immerse myself in the type of wild that suffocates all peace from my soul. What I need is to find a way to take peace with me, no matter the setting or circumstances.
Do you sense chaos in your head, home, or the world at large? I get it. It’s all over the place, really. And if your surroundings are currently nice and calm, you can bank on an inevitable shift in the tide along with bolstering waves ready to crash and thrash over and around you. The world is busy, there is constantly some sort of chaos, and evil isn’t going anywhere on this side of heaven. So, the best we can do to prepare for the ill effects of these truths is to determine our defense and offense against it. Which, simply put, is this: Jesus. We need Jesus. We need his presence, his protection, and we desperately need his peace. And the great news that I want to remind us of is that he tells us in his trustworthy Word how to find that peace.
In the book of Philippians ,Paul urges the followers of Jesus—that’s me and you—to think about these things: whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable… anything that is excellent or praiseworthy. He goes on to say, Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. And isn’t this what we are longing for in a world full of relentless chaos and clutter? The fulfilling peace of God?
I know how hard it is to avoid the loud noises of the world around you—the busyness, the distractions, and the fast pace of modern society. But we must remember to set our eyes and heart on Jesus at the dawn of each day. And to keep our gaze his way.
Friend, look up to him. Fill up on him so that you may begin to see life through his lens and find a focus above the wild waves of the world. A focus fixed on his peaceful promises—on his comforting truths, his lovely creations, his admirable gifts, and his excellent and praiseworthy blessings. Having your mind set on Jesus will keep your eyes above the chaos and your spirit swelling with the peace of God that will fill and take over your soul and sight.
Let’s Pray:
Heavenly Father, You are the God of peace, and I desperately need Your peaceful presence and promises every moment of every day. In this world, there seems to be chaos no matter where I turn. An unrest that threatens to consume and pull me into a place where peace feels unreachable. But help me turn my eyes to you. Help me fix my thoughts, as you instructed in your Word, on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. Lord, I know with my mind set on you, your promises, and your goodness, I can carry peace with me through any trial or amount of chaos. And this is such a beautiful blessing. I praise you for always being by my side and always being my peace.
