How to Build a Life Worth Living

How to Build a Life Worth Living

Thinking back over your younger years, what were some of your first jobs? If you are like me, they were probably numerous and varied. As a life and legacy coach I’ve spent years observing how society views a job or more importantly a career. Since it is crucial that we provide for our families it is also crucial for us to determine how we view our current job or career. From my vantage point I’ve found there are three primary views most people have with respect to their employment from the world’s perspective. Consider the following:

Provision
Many people see a job as the way to provide for their families and/or personal needs. They live from paycheck to paycheck never fully understanding God has a better and more fulling design for their lives. Studies show more than 80% of employees live their lives working in a job that provides limited satisfaction and little sense of value. If you find yourself in this place too, God desires more for you.

Identity
Some people view their job or career as the definition of their identity. The success they attain is the core of who they become as an individual. They allow the world to define their perception of influence and importance. However, upon retiring, they often find themselves lost as the identity they had is now gone. Maybe this describes how you see yourself too, God says in Him you are more than enough.

Purpose
Too often people go through life, living and working to meet the status quo while in search of true purpose and meaning. If you don’t take away anything else from me today—please understand, you were perfectly created by God with a distinct call on your life. God matched you with your talents and opportunities to accomplish His purposes. Whatever the call God has placed on your life, know He will always provide the talents and abilities required for you to succeed. It is only through Christ and seeking his call on your life that you will find real purpose and meaning.

We live in a fast-paced world where having more stuff, being more successful than others, and doing more than the person in the next office, has become a way of existence and the level of career success we’ve achieved becomes the essence of our identity. Taking Selfies is a way of life and "robbing Peter to pay Paul" is our culture’s financial plan. The demands of life keep building while our strength starts waning. We exist to get through today often with little time to plan for tomorrow.

The great news is—life doesn’t have to be this way. When you come to the place where you understand and follow the call God has placed on your life you will find He is the source of your provision, identity and purpose.  He brings purpose to chaos; identity to status quo; and provision to unmet needs. He created you with everything you need to succeed at His call on your life. When you choose to surrender your plans to his purposes by saying YES to His call you will build a life worth living.

“For I know the plans I have  for you,”  declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and future.”  - Jeremiah 29:11(NIV)
