Steph Curry Sparks Controversy by Backing Kamala Harris’ Pro-Choice Views

Fans and pro-life activists are pushing back against NBA superstar Steph Curry after he expressed support for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, specifically pointing to her stance on legal abortion as a key factor in his endorsement. The four-time NBA champion for the Golden State Warriors and 2024 Olympic gold medalist for the United States made the comments on CNBC, saying endorsing Harris was an "easy choice."

Although Curry endorsed Harris at the Democratic National Convention in a video, he did not, until now, explain his endorsement.

Asked what issues he cares about the most, Curry answered, "especially women's rights, and thinking about what's at stake with this election, and understanding we need to be in a position where women have the right to choose what's right for them, and that's at the top of this for me."

"I have amazing women in my life who've been a huge inspiration to me, but knowing Kamala and having been around her, and understanding she's qualified for this job," he added. "She's, I think, representing what it means to be a great leader and being a decent human being in terms of representing our country the right way.

"So it's an easy choice for me, but to be able to be in a situation where you can be a part of the DNC, do a video like that, let people know where I feel like, but foster positive conversations through it all," he said. "I think that's what our country needs."

Curry's mother, Sonya Curry, revealed in a 2022 interview and book that she nearly aborted Steph.

"God had a plan for that child," Sonya Curry told podcaster and pastor Luke Norsworthy.

It would have been her second abortion, she said.

"If I would have gone through that, there would have been no Wardell Stephen Curry II," she said, referencing his full name.

She said the "Spirit" was "interceding at that moment in a way that I didn't even know at the moment was happening."

Lila Rose, founder and president of the pro-life group Live Action, expressed disappointment in the NBA superstar's comments.

"I pray that it's the case that Steph Curry is in a bubble and just has never heard anyone explain to him that women's right to choose is really the lethal violence against a helpless, developing human being," Rose said on her podcast. "An abortion is the starving to death with an abortion pill or the suctioning to death with a first-trimester abortion or the dismembering to death with a second-trimester abortion, of a baby, of the image of God.

"It is the antithesis of love," Rose said of abortion. "It is hate. …That's what Kamala supports."

Said pro-life activist Anna Lulis, "He wouldn't be here, and his children wouldn't be here if his mom had gone through with the abortion."

Pro-life activist Benjamin Watson, a former NFL player, said Curry's comments demonstrate that the pro-life community has more work to do.

"Many people have been shocked or disappointed by Steph Curry supporting abortion as his top voting issue. I am neither," Watson said on X (formerly Twitter). "I am motivated, though. If these weak talking points can convince him that life is inconsequential, how much more could he be influenced by the actual truth? We have work to do."
