Over-Adaptation

There are times when it is healthy to adapt. There are times when coping is something we all must do. However, coping over a long period of time takes a tremendous toll. Consider the woman who learns to tiptoe around her angry husband. Imagine the man who watches every word so as to not upset his temperamental wife. This kind of adaptation begins to shape us in a unhealthy way. We lose parts of ourselves at each step. Be very careful at what you give up for peace. True peace is never found in pleasing others. Rather, Scripture tells us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you” (John 14:27).
