Eating Cookies

"How many cookies can you eat on an empty stomach, Fred?" Brad asked
Fred thought for a while then answered, "probably thirty or forty."
"Wrong," said Joe, "because your stomach is no longer empty after you eat one. Gotcha, ha, ha!"
Fred thought that was great. "I must try it on my wife," he thought.
"Honey, how many cookies can you eat on an empty stomach?"
"Ten or so", came the bored drawl.
"Aw shucks, hon. If you had said 30 or 40, I could have told you a nice joke!"
