World War II Officers

When my brother-in-law was in the Army during World War II, he found that he was not the only one who had difficulty addressing young officers as "sir." At one inspection, the private next to him was asked by an officer, "Did you clean your rifle?" "No," the private replied, leaving off the hated "sir." "No what?" thundered the officer. "No clean."
