Black Friday Madness Versus the Real Meaning of Christmas

Have you seen some of the stories and headlines from Black Friday, the first Christmas shopping day after Thanksgiving, which began in some stores at sundown Thanksgiving day?

"Gang fight at Black Friday sale," "Man punched in face pulls gun on line-cutting shopper," "Shots fired outside Walmart," "Customers run over in parking lot," "Insane battle over phones," "Shoplifter tries to mace security guards," "Mayhem at Nebraska mall where nine murdered in 2007."

I wouldn't mind if Christmas was banned. This hasn't been about the observance of the birth of Jesus Christ for many years. It is all about commerce and profits for stores and companies. They don't even try to pretend anymore. Nativity scenes are banned from most shopping malls so as not to offend non-Christians. A federal judge in Santa Monica prohibited all religious displays, including a nativity scene that has been set up on public land for 60 years.

For those of us who worship Jesus as the Son of God, He deserves a better gift than this riotous display of consumption.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
