An elderly Christian was looking at a picture of Satan with the traditional horns and ugly face, and he said, “If Satan came to me looking like that I think I would give him a good fight! But instead, he comes to me in the form of a nice comfortable nap on Sunday mornings instead of going to church!
My friend, to deny the person of the Devil, some simply drop the “D” and call him “evil.” But God says that this great enemy is a person and not just an influence. There can be no influence without personality. According to God’s Holy Word, Satan walks, speaks, thinks, and rules, and is called the “prince of the power of the air, and” the “god of this world.” His other names are Lucifer, Beelzebub, Satan, the wicked one, for he is the agent of evil and not just evil itself.
My friend, ridicule will not eliminate the Devil. He is the king over his own realm of demons and fallen angels, the kingdom of darkness. His one desire is to keep men from God, and to spoil the fellowship of those who belong to God. With all of his power however, Satan is still subservient to God, for his power and knowledge are limited and he can only be at one place at a time. He is not like God Who is everywhere at once. Satan is not omniscient (all knowing). He does not know our thoughts even though he tries to influence our minds. He is not omnipotent (all powerful). He is stronger than mankind and can do more than all of us put together.
You might be asking, “But how do we fight this enemy of God and man?” God tells us in His Word in James 4:7 – “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
