Things that Matter
by Berni Dymet

Ex. 20:3-5 … you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them;

Recently my wife Jacqui and I downsized from a house to an apartment. And so, we had to sell some of our furniture - it just wasn't going to fit.

Interesting process that - letting go of things. It really tells you something about where your heart is. I looked at the lounge suite - really comfortable and it went so well with our house.

Part of me - well, there was a tinge of sadness. I mean, we do surround ourselves with things we like and there's nothing wrong with that.

But the greatest joy of it all for me was letting go of a house that we loved and furniture that we liked - with just a tiny tinge.  Because years ago - my possessions were everything to me.

But somehow these days, their significance has waned. And not because of anything I've done - just because I've discovered that the richness of my relationship with God and my wife and my family - that's what really matters.

That's good.
