Son of David [Part 2]

Are you ready for some good news?

Jesus was more David than David could ever be. Jesus is the true Shepherd, Hero and King.

Text: “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” - (Matthew 1:1, ESV)

We’ve just begun our series on the life of David. It’s entitled “Son of David” because, ultimately, we study the lives of old testament saints to learn about their fulfillment in Christ. No Old Covenant figure more clearly typifies Jesus than beloved David.

David was so significant in God’s big story that Jesus was known as the Son of David.

Like Jesus, David was born in Bethlehem and was considered an unlikely candidate to be king. He was misunderstood and unappreciated by those closest to him, persecuted by existing leadership, but was unafraid of evil.

Both Jesus and David had opportunity to kill and displace existing leadership by force, but they chose not to.

Neither cared what others thought of them; they had a higher mission.

Both were anointed and filled with the Spirit, and they worshipped deeply.

They were both warriors.

David was a shepherd, a hero, and a king. He was a man who watched over sheep, heroically fought the giant Goliath in order to save his people as their champion, and then ruled in such a way to establish peace, expand the borders and create order in the land.

Spiritually, Jesus was also a shepherd, a hero, and a king. What David did in the natural realm, Jesus fulfilled in an eternal, unlimited way. Jesus watches over his sheep – his people who are prone to wander, and who need the loving touch of a shepherd who knows them by name. Jesus heroically fought the curse of sin and death and saved his people once and for all. And Jesus now rules as King, holding all things together on earth as it is in heaven. And that’s the Gospel!
