The Smartest People In The World?

Luke 10:17-24

Stephen Hawking, proclaimed by many to be the smartest man in the world, joined Yuri Milner, Internet investor, and Frank Drake, SETI research pioneer, to launch a new ten year drive to discover ET. The project will combine the latest radio telescopes and big data computers. The cost? One hundred million. The bet? Hawking laid out the rational for the project.

“Somewhere in the cosmos, perhaps intelligent life might be watching these lights of ours, aware of what they mean. Or do our lights wander a lifeless cosmos, unseen beacons announcing that, here on one rock, the universe discovered its existence? Either way, there is no better question. It’s time to commit to finding the answer, to search for life beyond Earth. The Breakthrough initiatives are making that commitment. We are alive. We are intelligent. We must know.”

In his statement Hawking personifies the material universe, making it the spontaneous generating source of conscious life and intelligence. In the first century Jesus, the true source of intelligent life, and the One who came to earth from beyond the galaxies, explained why the “smartest” people in the world don’t get it.

“At that hour, Jesus, rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, ‘Father, I praise You, Lord of Heaven and Earth, that you have hidden these things from the smart and the wise and revealed them to infants. Yes, this is what pleased You.

All things have been given to Me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.’ Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes who see what you see for many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see and they did not see it and to hear what you hear and they did not hear it.’” Luke 10:17-24

I can ask my six-year-old grandson, “Who’s God’s Son who came from beyond the universe to die on the cross and rise again so that we can be born into God’s family and live with Him forever?” And he knows the answer. I pray that the smartest man in the world will soon humble himself like a child so that he won’t have to wait for news from his telescopes and computers about ultimate life not in the stars but beyond.

LORD, yesterday after the final exam one of my students expressed that they had never understood Your Word but now they have learned how to allow Your Spirit to help them understand. Thanks for the joy I saw in his eyes and for his child-like openness. Help some of the professors who teach with Hawking, who know who Jesus is, to be able to reach their friend and colleague.
