The Cheers Never Stop
On Sunday evening after speaking at a church in the northern part of Atibaia, a gifted Brazilian soccer player wanted to talk. His brother lives in Little Elm, just west of Frisco, north of Dallas, and his English was perfect. He had traveled to the States to visit his brother and played soccer.
Then I told him when I was in Guatemala teaching students from all over Latin America and it came time for Brazil to play Germany in the FIFA semi-finals World Cup, they insisted we cancel class. So I was cheering and booing right along with my students. “Do you think Brazil will be able to recover in time for the Olympics in Rio after the worst defeat in Brazilian soccer history?”
My brother-in-law and sister came to Brazil fifty years ago to found Word of Life’s first Bible Institute. Throughout their time here, Brazil reigned over the world of soccer. With Pelė, their super star, they won four world cups. No other team has won more, but now the glory has departed. In Psalm 145 King David reminds me of cheers that will never end.
“I will exult you (literally ‘lift You high’), my God the King;
I will bless Your Name forever.
Every day I will bless You and cheer Your Name forever and ever.
Great is the LORD and greatly to be cheered.
His greatness—No one can fathom.”
LORD, whether it’s the Dallas Cowboys in Texas or the National Soccer Team in Brazil, the glory years and the cheers always end. On Sunday night as I stood listening to a church packed with Brazilians fervently pouring out Your praise, I realized that since June, You have given me the joy of hearing Your glorious praise in Kenya, New Jersey, Texas, South Korea, and in Brazil. Thank You that this cheering from Your people will never end. I need You to give me the passion I see when Brazil or the Cowboys win. Help me to fervently cheer You today!
