The Touch of Universal Healing

Luke 6:-17-19

At Rotary a brilliant microbiologist who is now in charge of infectious disease control at a hospital in the town next to us gave us a briefing on the Zika virus and the threat against pregnant women. She gave the data on the studies done in Brazil linking microcephaly among infants with Zika. She stressed that the mosquito carrying the virus bites at all hours of the day, and that it was important for us to guard against standing water in our yards, use effective insect repellent, and she warned against pregnant women traveling to the areas of greatest infection. The sickness itself is hardly noticeable—fever, light rash, joint pain, and red eyes—but in infants small heads and brain damage devastate. Then, in the late afternoon I headed for Baylor to visit a friend who is battling a tough cancer.

In this present world we just get a handle on one epidemic and another breaks out. This battle against relieving suffering and prolonging life needs to be fought, but what keeps me going is the fact that a King visited this planet and power to heal flowed from His body.  As Luke reports about the crowds from all over gathering to hear Jesus teach, those who were sick or oppressed by demonic influences were instantly healed, just by His touch.

After Jesus went up into the solitude of the mountain, prayed all night, and then chose the Twelve, He came down, found some level ground, and a crowd gathered from every corner of the country and beyond.

“And He came down with them and stood in a level place. Many of His disciples and a large number of people from all of Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the seacoast area of Tyre and Sidon, they all came to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by unclean spirits were healed. All in the crowd were seeking to touch Him because power exuded from Him and all were being healed.” - Luke 6:17-19

The healing power of Jesus is still present among His people and I’ve seen powerful healings as those who are sick call for the elders of their church as James 5:14-16 instructs and there is prayer and anointing with oil. But Jesus’ healing power when He was physically here on earth in Israel gives us a glimpse of the kind of kingdom He will rule when the curse of sin is finally removed, Satan is thrown into the eternal destruction of the Lake of Fire, and we rule with Jesus in a New Heaven and a New Earth.

LORD, I can't tell You how exciting it is when You allow me to see a glimpse of Your healing power. We saw this when You raised up someone we prayed for from the death bed of Ebola and allowed them to live. I see Your love expressed in this infectious disease specialist who is so passionate about getting out the right information so that there will not be an increase in this present Zika attack. Most of all, I can hardly wait for the day when Your power to heal touches the entire universe.
