Drive Through the Flames

Proverbs 1:32-33

Paul Duncan, the battalion chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, was on the front lines fighting the Hidden Valley Fire when he got the frantic call. His own home had become the front lines and his wife, son, and two teen daughters were facing the fire.  Frantically, they grabbed what they could, loaded their three vehicles, and took off through the smoke. In the escape his daughters got separated from their mom and brother. They called dad. The seventeen- year-old was at the wheel. “Dad, what should I do?” The fifteen-year-old was screaming. There was a wall of fire blocking their path. Years of firefighting guided his words. “You need to drive all the way through the fire—just step on the gas, look straight ahead, don’t pay attention to what’s going on around you, focus on driving, and get out of there.” The cell phone went dead and Duncan faced the burning homes on his own front line. The desperate task made it easier but he constantly kept checking his cell phone for news.

In Proverbs 1:20 as Lady Wisdom finishes her first public street meeting, she cries out that wrong turns will destroy the naïve teen and complacency will wipe out the indifferent fool. But then she notices that someone in her audience is paying attention.

“For the waywardness of the naïve will slay them and the complacent smugness of fools will destroy them, but the one who listens to me will live securely. They’ll find safety without dread of harm.” - Proverbs 1:32-33

Chief Duncan got the word from one of his fellow officers. His home was burnt to the ground, but Rose and Paige, his daughters, obeyed their dad, drove through the fire line, and made it to safety. His wife and son made it through the flames as well.

LORD, Your wisdom can teach me how to drive through many of the threats that life will throw at me. Give me the courage to listen to your calls and to obey. Your Spirit inside gives me the courage and strength to follow through. And thanks again for Jesus. Because of Him, I don’t ever have to fear the flames.
