Delivering Hard Truths

In a popular Geico commercial about Abe Lincoln’s honesty, there’s a video of Mary Todd Lincoln supposedly asking Abe if she looks fat in the dress she’s wearing. Abe is tormenting over his answer, until he indicates that maybe it does make her look fat, “just a little,” as she storms out of the room.
In the workplace, there are times when we’re asked questions that a truthful response may result in hurt feelings. It can put us in an uncomfortable position.
Proverbs 15:2 says, “The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, But the mouth of fools spouts folly.”
When we need to deliver difficult truths, ask clarifying questions, pray for God’s help making knowledge acceptable, then offer up your response carefully, with love. Truth without kindness is not easily accepted.
