No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 8:37-39
When you read Romans 8:37 you can accurately say, “Wow! God’s grace is amazing. He loves and values me. Nothing can change that!” Just as collectibles are often valued because of who they belong to, it’s the same with people. Your value is in who You belong to. You are like a common item that becomes precious because it was used or owned by a president—your value is in the One who has set His love upon you. Your value to God is not related to your performance; it’s related to God’s incredible grace.
“[Nothing] will be able to separate [you] from the love of God in Christ”(v.39). The attitude that emerges from this truth is security. If you didn’t earn it, if you didn’t pay for it, if you didn’t deserve it, then you don’t have to worry. God is loving, and you are secure.
Insecurity is epidemic in our day. Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce—not great odds. You have probably experienced a significant rejection in your life. Or consider the way people move around today, uprooting themselves and their families. I can’t believe the number of those who have approached me to say, “Goodbye. I took a different job where they offered me another $0.37 per hour.” They deep-six their whole life and all of their connectedness—for what? A little more sunshine? A promise of security?
I think that’s a huge mistake. We live such insecure lives. People place too high a value on things (like jobs) that are very low on the scale of genuine significance. We trade and throw away relationships like they’re not meaningful when they really are. All because we’re searching for security—when the Source of true security loves us so much.
Know this: God has set His love upon you. Ultimately, your security can’t be geographical or based on human relationships. Your security can’t be in where you worship. Your security is in Who you worship and the love He has for you! O that God would help you embrace His love as your identity, and find an unshakeable security in Him.
- Where do you notice insecurity in your life?
- What hard choices do you need to make to base your security on your relationship with God?
Lord, thank You for the profound security of knowing that absolutely nothing will be able to separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus my Lord.Forgive me for allowing the ridiculously inferior security options of the world to divert my attention from what I can only have in You. Show me today where my insecurities drive my decisions. I long to live as Your quietly confident child. In Jesus’ name, amen.
