“Who is among you who reverently fears the Lord … Yet who has deep trouble and has no shining splendor in (her) heart? Let (her) rely on, trust in, and be confident in the name of the Lord, and let (her) lean upon and be supported by (her) God.”
Isaiah 50:10
The Amplified Bible

EXPLORATION

Lesson #4: How God embraces me with His support.

“Embrace” – To encircle. To include. To encompass.

In what area of my life do I need God’s support?

INSPIRATION

“Father God,
Hold me up
from my tumblings
when I have no more energy
to crawl;
when all I seem to do
is fall
Scoop me up, Lord
Hold me secure
Against your chest
until forgetful of my bruises
I can reach out
Once again
And grasp
Life’s glittering mobile.”
Kathy Keay

When my husband and I were transferred to a Rehabilitation Hospital after being hit by a drunk driver, our only mode of transportation for many weeks were wheelchairs.

I’ll never forget when I was finally told by my doctor that I could stand-up for the very first time. There was a great deal of joy on that day. But as I began to bear weight on my wobbly legs, I soon found out that I could not stand by myself. At first, I had to keep my hands on parallel bars as well as have physical therapists keep their arms under mine to support me. After several weeks, I was given a walker that not only provided me with the balance necessary, it also had what they called a “shelf” to hold and steady my left arm which was severely fractured. Roll the clock up several months and I was using a four-pronged cane that steadied me when I attempted to walk.

As I struggled to gain better access to the world around me, I found that as my strength increased, I was able to adjust to some new piece of equipment better fitted for my improving ability to walk.

God’s relationship with us – the way He sustains and supports us – is a lot like the specialized equipment I was given to assist me as my recovery progressed.

In Psalm 55:22 we are told to “Cast your burden on the Lord (releasing the weight of it) and He will sustain you.” (Amplified Bible).

The word sustain means He will bear you up – He will carry you. And David refers to this support given to us by God when He says that our “Refuge, the most High, will give His angels especial charge over you … they shall bear you up” (Psalm 91:9-11, The Amplified Bible).

I don’t know about you, but there are days when I need to be reminded that God not only embraces me with His watchful care; He not only protects and comforts me; but that He also puts His arms under mine to support me when I am too tired … too worn-out … and too discouraged to carry myself, let alone some burden.

These words penned years ago by Anthony Showalter, who at the time was the principal of Southern Normal Musical Institute in Dalton, Georgia, aptly convey the trust we can have in the support of our Heavenly Father:

“What have I to dread,
What have I to fear,
Learning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace
With my Lord so near,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.”

“God, the eternal God, is our support at all times, especially when we are sinking into deep trouble … even when you are at your lowest, underneath are the everlasting arms.”
Charles Spurgeon

AFFIRMATION

“God of our life,
there are days when the burdens we carry
chafe our shoulders and weigh us down;
when the road seems dreary and endless,
the skies gray and threatening;
when our lives have no music in them,
and our hearts are lone,
and our souls have lost their courage.
Flood the path with light,
run our eyes to where
the skies are full of promise;
tune our hearts to brave music …
… and so quicken our spirits
that we may be able to encourage
the souls of all who journey with us
on the road of life, to your honor and glory.”
St. Augustine

“He shall feed His flock like a Shepherd; He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead.”
Isaiah 40:11
King James Version
