A Call for Help

Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Gal. 6:2)

Melanie had never called anyone besides family members for help, but her mother and sisters were out of town at a women’s conference, and her husband was on a business trip.

After a few rings a pleasant voice answered on the other end of the line. Melanie glanced at her daughter dozing peacefully in her wheelchair and almost hung up the phone, but instead she said a quick, silent prayer and spoke quietly into the mouthpiece. After exchanging greetings with Jessica, she told her why she had called.

“I need a couple of hours out of the house this afternoon to take care of some business,” explained Melanie. “I can’t leave Dawn with just anyone, but, since you told me you’ve looked after your niece who has special needs similar to Dawn’s, I thought maybe you’d help.”

“Like I told you,” replied Jessica, “I know how hard it is to get the kind of help you need. And I know what a blessing it’s been to my sister to have a few people she could trust with my niece. Would you like for me to come right now?”

Melanie breathed a sigh of relief. “That would be great, Jessica. You’re an answer to prayer.”

All children are gifts from the Lord. Still, parenting a child with special physical, emotional, or mental needs presents unique challenges for a mom. Round-the-clock care, strict adherence to schedules, unpredictable problems, expensive treatments, and isolation can drain and discourage even the most committed mother.

Isaiah 40:11 paints a beautiful picture of God tenderly embracing children and those who take care of them. When you are weary, allow yourself to rest in His strong arms. Also, ask God for suitable, safe, and loving people to help you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
