I know your works—your love, faithfulness, service, and endurance. (Rev. 2:19)

I have never known a more servant-hearted person than Shirley. She has served the Lord, her church, and her family in ways uncounted and often unobserved. She does the laundry for our church’s preschool area, from doll clothes to baby bibs, from towels used to wipe off the wet sliding board to smocks worn in the newborn nursery. She helps with Vacation Bible School and children’s church. She served on our pastor search committee. She has rocked babies and wiped preschoolers’ noses. She never forgets to send birthday and anniversary cards. She holds people up in prayer and is the first to hug you when you are hurting.

One of the most beautiful things I’ve seen Shirley do is a ministry to the children of a nearby apartment complex. Every week she and a few other volunteers meet the children in the apartment’s clubhouse after school. For the next two hours, Shirley gives the children a snack, reads them a Bible story, and helps them with a craft. They sing songs and play games, all while learning about Jesus. The children are from low-income families, and some can’t speak English very well, but their little faces light up when they see Shirley every Thursday.

We all want to leave a legacy of faith and to have kingdom impact while we are here. Ask the Lord how you can do that. He has special ways He has gifted you to make that impact on your community and your world. One on one, life on life, we can make a difference for eternity. By serving others, we bring honor and glory to the Lord. So do all you can. Pray. Love. Volunteer. Give. Be the hands and feet of Jesus.
