A New Day
A New Day
I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert. (Isa. 43:19)
The surprise party Mary’s husband had planned was drawing to a close. Moms and dads were gathering their children, helping them pack coloring books into their backpacks. Mary was glad her friends had brought their little ones with them.
Mary and Jack had finally come to terms with the fact that they would not have children of their own. The disappointment had hung heavy over their marriage for months. But during the summer the couple, both teachers, volunteered to assist in an inner-city kids’ club while the regular workers rotated through much-needed vacations. Jack and Mary had quickly fallen in love with the children, and God opened their eyes to the many children all around them who needed love and attention from Christian adults like themselves.
She didn’t know if they would adopt or just find other ways to engage with children, but Mary knew God had a plan for her and Jack to invest in children in the classroom and beyond. And while the scene of parents and their children would have caused her to sink just months ago, Mary took a deep breath, thanked God for the well-loved children in her midst, and reached for a tiny pink jacket. It was a new day.
We all face myriad disappointments in life—a lost job, the end of a dream, the death of a relationship, the ache of infertility, a failure, a broken promise. But Isaiah 43:19 tells us to pay attention to God in our times of disappointment because He may be up to something new and amazing. How are you handling your disappointments today?
