Anchor of Peace
Anchor of Peace
The peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 4:7)
In January, I decided to look forward and think about what I would like my life to look like over the next twelve months. To be honest, I didn’t make it a matter of prayer, but each time I asked myself the question—What do I want my life to be about in the coming year?—the same answer kept coming to mind. The answer I envisioned was the word shalom.
I researched the word shalom to find out exactly what it meant. The most encompassing definition I could find was this: completeness, wholeness, health, peace, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, the absence of agitation or discord. This definition resonated with me, and I sought the Lord on how He would like for me to move forward.
Having never had a regular daily prayer time, I decided this would be my first action. Every morning I spend at least thirty minutes praying through Scripture and reading a devotional like this one that helps me apply God’s Word to everyday life. In my time alone with God, I’ve experienced clear leadings, godly insight, inexplicable peace, and an ever-growing trust and devotion to my Lord. Our time together is precious and fulfilling, and because of God’s growth in me, my anxious heart has found peace, safety, rest—in other words, shalom.
We get to know people by spending time with them and learning about who they are. As the relationship grows, so does a level of understanding, peace, safety, and rest. Spending time with God does the same thing. As we seek Him by intentionally spending time with Him, we have an opportunity to learn about Him, hear His heart, and be transformed.
