Be Still

Be still, and know that I am God. (Ps. 46:10 niv)

I only thought I was overloaded before. I was now working part-time, carting the kids back and forth to school, taking care of the house, the yard, the bills. I just knew that if one more thing was added to the mix, I wouldn’t be able to handle it. But necessity drove me back to work full-time, and I find myself on the balance beam of too much to do, too many responsibilities, too much stress.

“Be still,” the Lord said.

But there’s no time to be still. If I’m still, something will fall between the cracks, like the bill I forgot to mail, the project I’m late on, the empty pantry.

“Be still, and know.”

Know what? Know that there’s no light at the end of my to-do-list tunnel? Know that there’s no household help on the horizon coming to my rescue?

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Ah, yes, Lord.

The Lord called to my aching, burdened heart. Against all human logic, I made time for Him in my overfilled, overextended schedule. He showed me what was important, what could wait, and how to ask for and accept help. The best part is that I know He sees me and my struggles and my to-do list.

Yes, many things must be done daily, weekly, monthly. But other things don’t have to be done. Too much busyness makes us miss the important, beautiful things of life—like spending time with the Master, watching our kids growing up, meeting our husband’s needs, enjoying our friends.
