A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. (Prov. 11:25 niv)
I clicked off a few frames on my new DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera to demonstrate to my sister how many frames per second it could shoot. “This will be great at the kids’ soccer and baseball games,” I said.
“Don’t you already have a digital camera?” Kate asked.
“Well, yes, but it’s just a point-and-shoot. This one has a lot more capabilities.”
Kate asked, “Do you know what kind of camera I use? I get those cheap disposable cameras. I’d like a digital, but we just can’t afford one right now.”
Later that evening I thought back on my conversation with Kate. Why don’t you give Kate your other camera? the Lord prompted. But, Lord! I protested. I still want the point-and-shoot so I can toss it in my purse when I need to take a small camera. The DSLR is for more serious shooting. (As if He didn’t know.)
Silence. He was waiting for me to obey. Then I thought about how it took me just a few hours working at my job as a nurse to earn the money I had paid for that basic camera. With all the medical bills Kate and Charlie had accumulated, it might be years before they could afford a nice one. I took the point-and-shoot out of the closet and set it by my purse to give to Kate the next day. I felt the Lord smiling.
When the Lord asks us to give away something we’re attached to, we may struggle to obey His prompting. But be obedient. Jesus said, “Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over—will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38).
