Closet Full of Blessings

Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Cor. 9:7)

“What did you talk about in your class tonight?” I asked my eight-year-old son, Liam, as we drove home from our Wednesday night program at church.

“We learned that each one of us has a closet full of blessings,” Liam said proudly.

“That sounds interesting,” I said. “What exactly is a closet full of blessings?”

“The teachers asked us to look in our closets for things we don’t need. Then they said maybe we could donate those things to the poor.”

I love it when Liam gets excited about helping others.

“Mom, could we go through our closets this weekend and clear out the things we don’t use anymore?”

“Great idea! I know my closet needs to be cleaned and organized too,” I said, as I smiled and silently thanked God for giving my sweet son a generous heart.

God deeply desires for us to bless others. Have you taken the time recently to ask God how He can use you to bless those around you? Maybe you’re someone who has a “closet full of blessings” that could be sorted out and donated. Maybe there are extra blankets, clothes, or other useful items at home. Perhaps instead of waiting until spring for some closet cleaning, you can clean out the items you no longer need now. Then pray and ask God where He would like for you to donate those items. You never know who you might be blessing when you listen to the voice of God.

Matthew 25:40 reminds us that whenever we do something to bless others, we are really blessing God Himself. “I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.”
