Did You Vote?
Did You Vote?
Government is God’s servant for your good. (Rom. 13:4)
“Did you vote this morning?” asked Dawn as she and Amanda jogged their second lap around the park’s running trail.
“Oh, I didn’t even know there was an election today,” Amanda admitted. She wrinkled her nose in embarrassment. “I used to be so involved in the political scene, but ever since the kids came along, I just haven’t kept up. It’s embarrassing really.”
Dawn shook her head. “I can totally relate. When my twins started school, I realized I didn’t even know who was on the school board making all those important decisions about my children’s education.” She paused to take a few steady breaths, then added, “That’s when God showed me that part of being a responsible parent and a godly influence on our world is being an involved citizen and educated voter.”
“Wow!” said Amanda. “I’d never thought of it that way. But I wouldn’t even know whom to vote for.”
“I tell you what,” said Dawn. “I have a voter’s guide in my car. I’ll give it to you to study this afternoon and then you can pray about it and go vote while I watch your kids. How does that sound?”
With all the other responsibilities we juggle, it can be difficult to stay informed about government policies, leaders, and elections. But if Christ followers want to impact our world positively, we must make the effort to stay informed and involved.
Romans 13:1–7 reminds us that governments are established by God for the good of the people. Therefore, it only stands to reason that godly people should be involved in government—holding office, giving input, voting, volunteering, and praying.
