Faith at Work

Christ did not send me to baptize, but to evangelize. (1 Cor. 1:17)

Geena worked at a university where she was surrounded by extremely educated people, many of whom didn’t care about or know the Lord. Her coworkers knew she was different. She didn’t participate in gossip, didn’t come in late, and didn’t undermine the boss. One day Geena was driving two of her colleagues—Tom and Marianne—to an off-campus meeting. Tom, an atheist, asked her if she was religious.

“I’m a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ,” Geena replied.

Marianne laughed. “You don’t believe that stuff about a man being born of a virgin, do you?”

“Yes, I do,” said Geena.

“And a man rising from the dead?” Marianne laughed.

“I don’t believe in God and all that sin stuff. It’s just so negative,” said Tom.

Geena began to feel uncomfortable—she didn’t know how to answer. Never before had she experienced such ridicule! She silently prayed, and feeling a wave of peace wash over her, Geena replied, “I’d love to talk with you about how Jesus has changed my life. And I can’t wait to share how He has healed my broken heart, restored my relationships, and given my life purpose.”

In Matthew 28:19, Jesus charged believers with sharing the gospel, which includes sharing it with our coworkers. But in the current climate how can we do this? Doors open when we simply live our lives with faith, show compassion to coworkers who are having difficulties, and do our work “for the Lord and not for men” (Col. 3:23). People begin asking us questions because they see we live our lives differently. And by acknowledging we don’t have all the answers—even though we are a Christian—we transparently share our life of faith with the lost.
