For His Glory

Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit? (1 Cor. 6:19)

As a recent newlywed—I’ve only been married for three weeks, and I’m twenty-three years old—I’ve been asked to speak to a group of middle-school girls at a friend’s church. The topic? God’s plan for sex and waiting for His choice guy.

“One of the most important things my parents taught me about sex,” I began, “was to love God. You see, God’s Word isn’t really about the do’s and don’ts. You have to see His heart behind what He says. And His heart is the best life for you, free from bondage to sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies, emotional baggage, and spiritual emptiness. When you love God first, you are able to understand and trust His love for you. Then you don’t have to go searching for love somewhere you shouldn’t.

“Another thing my mom taught me,” I said, “is that a girl’s heart is like a fragile teacup. And when you give a part of yourself away, that teacup becomes cracked and chipped. This is what happens to your heart when you don’t wait for God’s guy.

“It isn’t that God is trying to keep something from you. He just wants us to live a life that is abundant and free. The life the world throws at you is a lie. Don’t fall for the traps the enemy will set for you. Besides, waiting for the guy God is preparing just for you is so worth it!”

Teaching our children about premarital sex, drugs, and other risky behaviors must be grounded in God’s Word. By loving Him first, they will be better able to handle what the world and the enemy throw at them. If they understand His heart behind what He says, they can better see the love—His love—that will keep them safe.
