He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will no longer exist; grief, crying, and pain will exist no longer, because the previous things have passed away. (Rev. 21:4)
One evening my husband and I sat down after dinner to watch TV. We heard one discouraging news report after another: “Stock Market Takes a Dive,” “US Troops Killed in Afghanistan,” “Russia Building Arms Plants in Venezuela,” “Corruption in Washington,” “National Debt Exceeds $16 Trillion.” Todd turned to the local news, and we heard reports of a robbery, a murder, and a missing child. I thought about what I had heard from some of the women in my Bible study recently. They were dealing with heavy issues like children on drugs, a husband hooked on pornography, a pregnant teenager.
We looked at each other, and I asked, “What kind of a world are we handing over to our children and grandchildren?”
Todd sighed and shook his head. “I know it can seem depressing, but no matter how bad things seem, God is in control.”
“I know that’s true, but with so many bad things happening, sometimes it’s hard to focus on the good things,” I answered.
If we focus too much on world events without remembering who is in control, it can be downright depressing. Jesus said, “You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world” (John 16:33).
If you find yourself disturbed over local and world events, remember who is in charge and be encouraged. Allow yourself to dwell on the good things in your life that often go disguised as forgotten blessings. Turn them into reminders of God’s faithfulness, consistency, and love.
