He Promised

The flour jar did not become empty, and the oil jug did not run dry. (1 Kings 17:16)

When I answered the phone, my friend Mindy was crying on the other end. “Jake just lost his job,” she told me. “How will we survive? What will we do?”

I sighed. My husband, Alex, and I were in the same situation. In fact, we had been for two years. “Mindy, I know you’re really scared right now. You’re wondering how you’ll pay the mortgage, how you’ll support your family, even how you’ll retire. But remember, God will take care of you because He loves you and you are His daughter. He promised.”

“But I don’t understand. We’ve tried to be good stewards of what He’s given us, we tithe, we even sponsor a missionary,” she said.

“I don’t understand it either, but God knows about your situation. This pink slip didn’t catch Him by surprise. He knows how much money you have in savings. He knows you need to put the kids through college. He even knows your bills. He’ll give you exactly what you need. I think one of the hardest things we as Christians have to learn is dependence on the Lord and that He has our best interests at heart. He will provide for you because that’s His nature. His provision probably won’t look like you think it should, but He will take care of you.”

When you are staring unemployment in the face, it’s hard to wrap your heart around this truth. But ask God to make you aware of all the little things He does every day to provide for you. Write them down; read them when you are afraid. These are faith builders. The stronger your faith grows, you’ll find you don’t need to “see” the answers because you trust the One who is holding on to you. He will guide and provide. He promised.
