In His Absence
In His Absence
Help me understand Your instruction, and I will obey it and follow it with all my heart. (Ps. 119:34)
Becky washed the last dinner dish, took a deep breath, and fought back the loneliness that sometimes surfaced at this time of day. Becky’s husband, Jack, had been deployed overseas for four months, and the evenings were still hard. Her two energetic sons kept her busy during the day, and activities with other military wives provided adult conversation, but the evenings had always been Becky and Jack’s time to talk, unwind, and pray together.
During Jack’s last deployment Becky had filled the lonely hours by reading romance novels, but she had learned her lesson. The steamy stories tempted her in ways she knew were not pleasing to God. In fact, as the months had gone by, she found herself drawn to men who seemed more accessible: men on favorite TV shows, her Sunday school teacher, and her son’s soccer coach. Fortunately Becky realized the cause of her discontent and threw the novels away.
Now as she reflected on those frustrating months, Becky was glad God had shown her some better ways to fill the void. Tonight she would take the boys for a walk and then sit down to study her Bible. When Jack returned, she would be physically and spiritually fit.
If you have a husband who is out of town often for military duty, business, or ministry, you know the frustrations and temptations that come with his absence. You may experience extreme loneliness, resentment, or jealousy. Such emotions, if left unchecked, can lead to temptations that could damage or destroy your relationship. Fortify the walls of your life and marriage by clinging to the truth of God’s Word, resisting worldly temptations, and surrounding yourself with godly influences. Even while he is away, you can build your marriage or tear it down.
