It’s Only Lunch
It’s Only Lunch
Each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. (James 1:14)
Meg put her purse in her desk and turned on her computer. She was tired after another week of being alone with the kids, working, and trying to hold everything together while Brian was gone on another business trip. Their relationship was strained, and she felt neglected.
Daniel, her coworker, stopped by her office. “Hey, how would you like to grab some lunch today?” he asked.
Meg hesitated, then said, “Sure.” As soon as the words were out of her mouth, she felt the Holy Spirit warning her, but she ignored it. It’s only lunch, she thought. But throughout the morning, Meg found herself thinking about Daniel—he was tall, handsome, and fun to be around. Maybe it will do me some good to get out for a change, she thought.
During lunch the conversation was lively, but it turned more serious. “I’ve been noticing that you’ve seemed kind of down lately,” Daniel said as he touched Meg’s hand. She pulled away and said, “Look, I shouldn’t have accepted your invitation. I’m married.”
“I know,” he replied. “But I could be a good friend if you need one.” Back at the office Meg realized she had used poor judgment. While it felt good to have a man’s attention, she knew that flirting with sin could get her in serious trouble.
Our society’s standards of what is and isn’t appropriate have changed over the years, sometimes blurring the line between right and wrong. As Christians we need to be clear about where we stand and to remember we represent the King of kings. Some things that are innocent in the world’s eyes may be areas in which the Lord calls us to a higher standard.
