Just Trying to Relax

Wine is a mocker, beer is a brawler, and whoever staggers because of them is not wise. (Prov. 20:1)

“How many glasses of wine have you had tonight?” John asked his wife at the end of a nice dinner out. Leslie’s mood switched from relaxed to defensive. “No more than usual,” she snapped.

Leslie took a sip, letting the warmth soothe her. With three kids, a part-time job, and caring for her mom, her stress level was through the roof. Wine had become a quick fix. “My dad always drank to unwind. That’s all I’m doing. Hey, it’s cheaper than therapy.” Leslie laughed.

“Not much. And your dad died of liver failure.”

“I don’t go for the hard stuff like he did. John, what’s the deal with you?”

“I’m just worried. You seem to need wine to relax, and you jump all over anyone who expresses concern. That tells me there’s a problem.”

Leslie grabbed her purse. “Let’s just go.” As she stormed out, she felt the stares of everyone in the restaurant. Later, as she tried to sleep, John’s words raced through her mind. Did she need wine to relax? If she did, did that make her an alcoholic?

Tears welled up as she replayed the scene in the restaurant. She’d never been the type to make a scene in a public place. What was happening to her?

At the end of a busy day of work, caring for kids, ministry, and activities, we all need to unwind. Many people in our society condone the use of alcohol, but the dangers of addiction go undisputed. Proverbs offers many warnings about the effects of alcohol. If you or someone you know has a problem, pray and seek professional help. Pray that God will keep you aware of signs of addiction, whether it’s alcohol or any other substance.
