Keeping Pace
Keeping Pace
Encourage the young men to be self-controlled. (Titus 2:6)
The colors were eye-popping, and stars floated across the screen. A catchy tune played in the background, and an invitation to take a “Best Friends Quiz” blinked perpetually. How in the world had Katy created something so sophisticated on the Internet, and how could Jodi navigate her way through it?
Jodi had decided to let her fifteen-year-old daughter develop a page on a popular social networking website. Katy begged to join for months, but only recently had Jodi received the “go ahead” in her spirit. When Katy first asked, Jodi had adamantly said, “Never!” She had heard stories of teens posting lurid photos, kids sending one another hateful messages, and predators using the website to find personal information about unsuspecting victims.
But recently Jodi had heard about other kids in their church who had pages. Jodi prayed about whether it would be in Katy’s best interest to participate in the website. Ultimately Jodi had decided to let Katy set up her page with a few conditions. Now the fun and the work were about to begin.
Let’s face it, many of our kids have outpaced us as far as technology goes, and keeping up requires a fast and furious pace. But if you’re going to responsibly raise your kids to live godly lives in the culture they’ve inherited, you’ll have to do your homework.
Daniel’s parents in the Old Testament must have done a good job preparing their son to navigate his way through a flashy and advanced culture. Throughout the book of Daniel, we see he was able to plug in to the culture of Babylon without getting pulled into its traps. What do you need to do to help your children safely navigate their tech-savvy and highly charged culture?
