Kindness of a Stranger

A Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion. (Luke 10:33)

I was thirty-nine weeks pregnant with our first child. A friend had offered to lend me her fancy car seat to use in my husband’s car. Knowing I would be too tired and busy to make the trek to her house after the baby was born, I decided to make a “quick” trip to get the seat.

But the trip wasn’t quick. I had an accident. I turned too quickly in front of an oncoming car, misjudging a blind hill. I drove off the road; my left front tire exploded.

This was before cell phones were so common. I was on a two-lane country road about three miles from my friend’s home. I stood in the road, tearfully examining the wrecked tire, wondering what to do. Several cars passed by until finally a woman stopped to help me. And because God is a loving Father, my rescuer that day was a labor and delivery nurse at a local hospital. Her own children were with her in the car. She drove me to my friend’s house where I called my husband.

I was so shaken that I only got her first name. Many times over the years I have attempted to search her out, but I’ve been unable to find her. She was a good Samaritan, showing God’s kindness and taking time out of her day to take care of a stranger. And while I don’t recommend getting in a car with someone you don’t know, I’ll never forget how Jesus reminded me that day that He is always looking after me.

Make kindness a daily habit. Reach out with encouraging words, a helping hand, a listening ear. We may never know until we get to heaven how an act of kindness done here on earth will reverberate into eternity.
