Look, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands. (Isa. 49:16)
My friend Leigh discovered that her husband was having an affair with a coworker. Leigh suggested that they go to counseling, move, even find new jobs. But nothing worked—he was unwilling to resolve the problem.
So after months of prayer and heartache, Leigh filed for divorce. She and the children would move closer to family, and she would find a new job. However, in the process of a routine physical checkup, Leigh found out that she had a sexually transmitted disease.
“I’ve just about had all I can take,” she told me. “When I’m tired, the darkness rushes in and threatens to overtake me. I begin to wonder if God even hears me or cares about me anymore.”
“Leigh, I don’t have any easy answers, and I don’t want to give you a canned response. I know you’ve been told to ‘turn it over to God’ and that ‘things will all work out.’ We know, deep down, it will all work out, but in the meantime I will tell you what I do know: God is good, and He will never forsake you or forget you.”
God tells us to cast our cares on Him because He cares for us (1 Pet. 5:7). He is willing to assume full responsibility for our burdens, if only we will let Him. God is good and He is faithful, and when we are drowning in sorrow and fear, we need to hold on to His goodness with all of our strength. The enemy will whisper that God has forgotten us or that He doesn’t love us, and he’ll even try to persuade us that God isn’t good. But don’t listen to him! Instead focus on the faithful Promise Giver who promises that He will never forsake us (see Heb. 13:5).
