Looking Good!

A person’s pride will humble him, but a humble spirit will gain honor. (Prov. 29:23)

I stood in the ladies’ room at work and looked at myself in the mirror. A twenty-pound weight loss, a new hairdo, and a new outfit. Looking good, I said to myself. I checked my lipstick one last time and strutted out to the break room.

I walked over to the coffeemaker and smiled at Greg, our computer guru. “Hi, how’s it going?” I asked as I filled my mug. “Mmm, OK,” he mumbled as he looked the other way and grabbed the creamer. What’s wrong with him today? I wondered. I stirred my coffee as my friend Rita walked over to me. She had a smile on her face that resembled a crooked stick.

“Your skirt,” Rita hissed. “I’ll walk behind you and follow you to the ladies’ room.” I felt the back of my skirt and realized that part of it was tucked inside my panty hose, partially exposing my backside. I was mortified! Yeah, I was looking good all right.

Later that evening as I nursed my bruised ego, I picked up my Bible and ran across Proverbs 11:2: “When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom.” OK, God, I get the point. I was getting a little too puffed up about my appearance when I should have been thanking You for the grace and strength to live a healthier lifestyle.

Genuine humility is a beautiful thing. We love to see it in others and often think of ourselves as humble. But pride keeps rearing its ugly head, and from time to time we’re tempted to think a little too highly of ourselves. But Philippians 2:3 says, “Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.” Now that’s good advice.
