Looking My Age

Gray hair is a glorious crown; it is found in the way of righteousness. (Prov. 16:31)

At a recent gathering with several other young moms, a friend told us she had asked her doctor about having a tummy tuck. After bearing three children, she felt she needed this procedure. After just one child, I could empathize. We listened as she explained what her doctor had said.

As a new parent, I have endured the late nights and sacrifice of my freedom with love, but accepting my body’s changes after pregnancy has been tough. After bearing a child, my body will never naturally be the way it was when I was younger. I have stretch marks on my stomach. My clothes fit differently, and despite my running, gravity already seems to be winning. Some of my friends are having injections, liposuction, even face-lifts. Sometimes I feel the pressure to conform, even though I can’t afford it. I don’t want to be the only one looking my age.

I admit, I would like my body to look like it did in my twenties. It’s tempting to do whatever it takes to maintain my youth. But in the New Testament, Peter says true beauty consists of “what is inside the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit” (1 Pet. 3:4). Psalm 139:14 reads, “I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made.” When we shift our focus from ourselves to Christ, we begin to glow with an inner radiance and confidence.

Plastic surgery is sometimes appropriate and needed, I’m sure, but before undergoing an expensive cosmetic procedure that involves risk, spend time in prayer and reflect on who you are in Christ. Ask Him if this choice is the right one for you.
