Losing It All

He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken. (Ps. 62:6)

I retrieved the mail from the mailbox and brought it inside. The box had been stuffed full of late notices from our credit card companies and even our mortgage company. After my husband, Kevin, lost his job, our son was in a serious automobile accident that required an extended stay in the hospital. We wound up owing a staggering amount to the hospital and various doctors. So Kevin and I began the painful process of bankruptcy.

Lord, I silently prayed. It’s bad enough that we’re in this situation, but the worry I’m feeling is suffocating. I should feel relieved that we’re finally going to have breathing room again with our finances. But instead I’m just stressing out that we couldn’t meet our obligations to our creditors.

I closed my eyes and tried to listen to anything God might be telling me. With all my heart I knew He wanted me to trust Him and believe He would be walking us through this tough time. I pictured giving my worry to God, laying it at the foot of the cross. I felt God telling me to give it all to Him. Not just my worry and stress but any other fears and doubts I was having as well. He was telling me to have faith. I knew God wanted me to live in freedom, despite my circumstances.

Worrying has a way of taking our focus off of God. One of His deepest desires is for us to know that no matter what we might face in our lives He is there for us. He wants us to trust in Him. When we worry, we’re focusing on what could go wrong, not on God and His ability to walk us through our situation.
