Magic Number

Watch out and be on guard against all greed because one’s life is not in the abundance of his possessions. (Luke 12:15)

Ellen recalled looking at her 401(k) balance on the computer screen and feeling a tremendous sense of satisfaction. Her account was getting closer to the magic number she had in mind. Grabbing a calculator, she had punched some numbers and put them down on paper.

If I earn 10 percent a year over the next four years, maybe I can think of retiring early, Ellen thought. She and her husband, Richard, had worked hard, tithed, paid their bills on time, contributed to their retirement plans, and had always lived below their means. She was already daydreaming about long, lazy days on the beach and traveling to see their children and grandchildren more often.

A couple of weeks later, the stock market plunged dramatically. Within a few weeks Ellen’s 401(k) was down by more than 30 percent. She felt sick to her stomach as she checked her balance on the computer again. Lord, Ellen prayed, this financial meltdown has ruined our plans. What are we going to do? Will we ever be able to retire? She sat in silence for a few minutes.

As Ellen remembered God’s promises, she realized that He would always be there and would meet their needs. She breathed deeply and prayed, Please help me to turn over this burden to You, Lord. You knew this would happen, and You know what the future holds. Help me trust in You and make wise choices.

In days of uncertainty, many people worry not only about the status of their retirement accounts but also about whether they will be able to put food on the table. But in spite of the shaky economy, international instability, and unemployment, God is still in control.
