Mrs. Jones

Love your neighbor as yourself. (Mark 12:31)

About a year ago my neighbor Mrs. Jones became a widow. Friends stopped by periodically, and on numerous occasions I thought about stopping by to visit her as well, but I let my busy schedule get in the way and kept putting it off.

But now as I stood in the greeting card aisle at the grocery store looking for valentines for my family and friends, I couldn’t help but think of Mrs. Jones. I knew she must be lonely. Although I had missed opportunities to show Jesus’ love to her, it still wasn’t too late. After I had selected cards for my husband, two children, and a couple of close friends, I found a special card for her.

The next day I knocked on her front door. When she answered, I could see that she was pleasantly surprised to see me. She invited me in, and we talked for almost an hour. As I was leaving, I invited her to join our family for dinner that night, and she accepted.

It’s easy to get caught up in our own lives and forget about people who are lonely. But we can show kindness to people in need in many ways. It could be as simple as sending a card. Or maybe you’ve felt the Holy Spirit calling you to serve in a nursing home or to volunteer in helping homebound senior citizens. James 1:27 says, “Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”

God wants us to care for those who desperately need His love and ours. Choose to make a difference in someone else’s life. Not only will they be blessed by knowing that God truly cares about them, but you will also be blessed by serving others.
