Never Too Late
Never Too Late
The ants are not a strong people, yet they store up their food in the summer. (Prov. 30:25)
I can’t remember a time when my husband and I were not living from paycheck to paycheck. Hoping to get ahead, we moved to an area with a lower cost of living. But instead of getting on top of things, we faced years of job losses, health problems, and broken promises of career advancement.
After our second son was born, I managed to set some money aside to open an IRA so I could start saving a portion of my freelancing income. Although I opened it with a small amount and haven’t been able to contribute much over the past few years, I keep the account open and leave the money alone. Not that I haven’t asked myself, Why bother? What difference will it make? But I know that a little savings, even an account opened years ago, is better than no savings at all. It’s never too late to start.
I’ve listened to stories from people who began saving early in life only to lose large chunks to an unstable economy, forcing them to start over. But I’ve learned to trust that God blesses our efforts to save, no matter what age we are when we begin or begin again. My quarterly statements remind me that I may not reach retirement with enough to travel the world, but I will have something.
According to Proverbs the ant, one of the tiniest creatures on the planet, stores for the future. Warnings of when it’s “too late” to start stocking up don’t seem to come into play. Scripture also provides evidence that God can multiply the efforts and provide beyond expectations for those who obey. The key is to do our part by being responsible, obedient stewards of all God entrusts us with.
