Not Helpless

You Yourself made the heavens and earth by Your great power and with Your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You! (Jer. 32:17)

I prayed along silently at church as my pastor was going over the church’s prayer requests. The needs were so many, so staggering.

There’s the couple who just filed for divorce; a man with a wife, three children, and a baby on the way who just lost his job; my precious mentor’s husband who was just diagnosed with lymphoma; a teenager who needs a heart transplant. As I listened, I also thought of the problems our nation is facing: job loss, financial scandal, foreclosures, political corruption. I added my own family’s needs to the list: needs for physical healing, for employment, for reconciliation.

The pastor began to preach, and guess what? It was about peace—Jesus’ peace—not the kind the world gives (John 14:27) but peace in Him and through Him (John 16:33). Jesus tells us not to be fearful or anxious, no matter how hopeless it seems.

Silently I thanked the Lord that I could offer up these hurting souls with huge needs to Him. My shoulders are not big enough to carry these situations, but the compassion He has placed in my heart can be lived out. I will do what I can to come alongside my brothers and sisters, helping in practical ways, and I will lay each need at the throne of the King who can mend bodies, hearts, and lives.

It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed with all the needs around us every day. But our God is never overwhelmed, never helpless, never defeated. He is mighty to save, and that means not just our spiritual salvation, but marriages, financial catastrophes, health issues. Remember, you can cast all your cares upon Him because He loves you (1 Pet. 5:7).
